There are thousands of movies filmed in Central Park. This Manhattan park has appeared on screen so many times that, along with the Empire State Building and the Statue of Liberty, it's one of the most famous places in New York, and arguably in the world.
It'll probably be one of the first NYC attractions you want to see when you land. And the moment you set foot in Central Park, hundreds of scenes from movies and TV shows will come flooding back.
That's only natural, because Central Park is the backdrop for iconic films. Start with the obvious, like Woody Allen's filmography, film classics such as Breakfast at Tiffany's, or the epic showdowns in The Avengers and the Spider-Man saga.
Famous movies filmed in Central Park
Let's kick off this tour with my pick of the most emblematic movies shot in Central Park.
Then I'll tell you which spots in Central Park get filmed the most and explain how to reach each one, so you can do the tour on your own.
1. The Avengers (2012)
After the final battle to save the city, all the heroes gather at Central Park's Bethesda Terrace. You can make out the Bethesda Fountain in the background.
2. Enchanted (2007)
Central Park becomes Giselle's giant ballroom as she wanders through it singing «That's How You Know.»
She passes through so many corners of Central Park that I'll soon dedicate a whole post to the Enchanted filming locations in New York.
For now, here are a handful of the spots that show up in this musical number from the Disney film:
🏞️ You'll see 3 very famous Central Park bridges: Gapstow Bridge, Gothic Bridge and Bow Bridge.
🌱 Giselle dances on the Great Lawn, one of the largest green spaces in Central Park.
🏰 Belvedere Castle, now a weather station, appears a couple of times.

⛲ The dancers cross The Mall and end the scene at the Bethesda Fountain
3. Spider-Man 3 (2007)
Spider-Man 3 has several crucial scenes in Central Park. Wouldn't you know it, one of them also happens at Bethesda Terrace 😆, when Peter Parker reflects on his identity as Spider-Man.
Another famous scene is when Mary Jane breaks up with Peter Parker on Bow Bridge, which is, ironically, the bridge couples in New York love most for proposals.

Another key scene takes place in the woods of The Ramble. That's where Peter talks through his feelings with Mary Jane Watson.

The Ramble is a wild-looking section of the park near the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Reservoir (read up on what they are and how to get to the man-made lakes of Central Park).
So far, Spider-Man is one of the movies filmed in Central Park that features the park the most.
4. Elf (2003)
Along with Home Alone 2, Elf is another classic New York Christmas movie. I rewatch both every single year 🤣.

Central Park takes center stage in the scene where Buddy helps Santa repair the magic sleigh.
If I'm not mistaken, they're next to The Pond and Gapstow Bridge (the same Central Park bridge that appears in Home Alone 2 and Enchanted).
If you're planning a trip to New York in December, watch it first! You'll love recognizing the places Buddy visits during his Manhattan adventures.
5. Home Alone 2: Lost in New York (1992)
Kevin McCallister has several adventures in the park, but one of the most memorable is his encounter with the Pigeon Lady, next to Gapstow Bridge and the man-made lake known as The Pond.

Getting to Gapstow Bridge is easy. It sits at the southwest entrance to Central Park, in Manhattan's Upper West Side.
6. When Harry Met Sally (1989)

Central Park is the setting for several of the couple's conversations over the years.
You'll get to see how the park looks in every season. The parts shot during New York's gorgeous fall will have you itching to visit in October.
Not in Central Park, but When Harry Met Sally contains one of Meg Ryan's most famous scenes ever. I won't spoil it, just watch! Hint: it happens over a meal at Katz's Delicatessen in the Lower East Side.

7. Ghostbusters (1984)
Ghostbusters is really one big love letter to New York. You'll see Central Park many times, and among them the tragicomic scene outside the Tavern on the Green restaurant stands out.
That's when Louis Tully, after a long chase, gets cornered and possessed in front of the restaurant's diners.
Any chance I get, I tell people this movie is where my fascination with New York began. Read the complete tour of the Ghostbusters locations I put together for you.
8. Breakfast at Tiffany's (1961)
Here's another Manhattan classic. Beyond Central Park, plenty of scenes were shot all over the city.
Here's an unforgettable one, in a place you should absolutely visit: Holly Golightly (Audrey Hepburn) and Paul Varjak (George Peppard) take part in a remote-control sailboat race at Conservatory Water.

9. Woody Allen movies in Central Park
Woody Allen fans know that his films almost always, with a few small exceptions, include some important scene shot in Central Park.
The park turns up several times in Annie Hall (1977), Hannah and Her Sisters (1986), Crimes and Misdemeanors (1989), in the Oedipus Wrecks segment of New York Stories (1989), in Mighty Aphrodite (1995) and in Deconstructing Harry (1997), to name just a few.
–o–
That wraps up this list of famous films that captured the beauty and versatility of Central Park, works that immortalized various corners of the park in our collective memory.
I'll surely keep adding movies to this list. Until then, keep reading with this roundup of 20 movies filmed in New York.
Central Park spots made famous by the movies
In the list of movies filmed in Central Park, I already mentioned several corners of the park that directors love. Here's how to get to the most popular ones:
1. The Bethesda Fountain

Everyone from D. W. Griffith, considered the father of modern cinema, to Woody Allen has filmed in Central Park.
Griffith used it constantly to pass a scene off as rural or exotic. He once turned the Bethesda Fountain into a Florentine piazza.
This fountain shows up on film many more times, but we love remembering the delightful Enchanted (2007) and its dance around the fountain and through the park.
2. Central Park bridges
And then there are the bridges of Central Park, so romantic yet also used for titanic duels like the one between Christopher Lambert and the imposing Clancy Brown in Highlander (1986).
The most filmed of the bridges is the romantic Bow Bridge (at the level of 74th Street, west of Bethesda Terrace).

Movies have trained us to see it as a special place for people in love, and it really is. Bow Bridge is where plenty of newlyweds choose to take their photos.

You'll see photogenic Bow Bridge in all its glory in The Way We Were (1977) by Sidney Pollack, Manhattan (1979) by Woody Allen, Keeping the Faith (2000) by Edward Norton, and in the Disney comedy Enchanted (2007).
But it isn't all love on Bow Bridge. This is also the bridge where Mary Jane Watson broke up with Peter Parker in Spider-Man 3 (2007).
Another Central Park bridge with plenty of screen time is Gapstow Bridge, which is where the kid from Home Alone meets the Pigeon Lady.
Romantic movies in Central Park
Central Park has been the go-to location for just about every romantic scene set in New York.
Jane Fonda and Rod Taylor rowed across Central Park Lake in Sunday in New York (1964), and about a decade later Barbra Streisand and Robert Redford did the same in The Way We Were (1973).

John Cusack and Kate Beckinsale fell hard in the middle of Central Park's Wollman Rink in Serendipity (2001), just as Ali MacGraw and Ryan O'Neal had done in Love Story (1970).
In Kate and Leopold (2001) Hugh Jackman rode through Central Park on horseback to recover Meg Ryan's purse, and Latina Cinderella Jennifer Lopez pretended to be someone else in front of Ralph Fiennes in the park in Maid in Manhattan (2002).

And that's without getting into the sheer number of movie couples who took the classic carriage ride through Central Park at dusk.
Comedies filmed in Central Park
There's also no shortage of Central Park scenes where the characters are completely happy and celebrating it somehow.
A classic: Frank Sinatra, Gene Kelly and Jules Munshin, three sailors passing through New York, spend a good chunk of the day biking through Central Park (On the Town, 1949).
Or in The Producers (1968), when Zero Mostel and Gene Wilder excitedly hash out their next Broadway production, «Springtime for Hitler,» over lunch in front of the Central Park carousel.

From the eighties, you might remember Tom Selleck, Ted Danson and Steve Guttenberg tossing a frisbee in Central Park in Three Men and a Baby (1987), another much-repeated scene of actors playing on one of the Central Park lawns.
Much more recently, Edward Norton and Drew Barrymore sing and dance through the park in Woody Allen's musical comedy Everyone Says I Love You (1996).
Remember Little Nicky (2000)? Adam Sandler plays the devil's third son, napping without a care on a Central Park rock and letting out some truly hellish snores.
That's where I'll stop for now, and I haven't even listed 1% of the scenes from movies filmed in Central Park. There's so much material it could fill a book ✍️.
Remember that there's a guided tour in Spanish that takes you to the park's most filmed spots from movies and TV series.
Free movies in Central Park
On some New York summer nights there are free movie screenings in Central Park (and in plenty of other spots around the city). Check out this year's screening schedule.
