Guía rápida

Downtown Brooklyn is a practical, workaday area, always full of office workers in a hurry, and its more modern architecture contrasts with the 19th century feel of its neighbor Brooklyn Heights.
After Midtown y el Lower Manhattan, it is the third largest civic and business district in New York.
What to see
The area is home to the imposing Brooklyn Borough Hall, which houses a handy Visitor Center with information on all of Brooklyn. Around it you will see other municipal government buildings.
You will find dozens of discount stores selling clothes and shoes along Fulton St Mall, plus old, well kept department stores (if you are looking to buy at a deep discount, try to time your trip with one of the sale seasons in New York).
The neighborhood is also home to the New York Transit Museum and the leafy Cadman Plaza Park.
An architectural gem in Downtown Brooklyn
The Lonely Planet guide recommends stepping into the lobby of the Dime Savings Bank, today a Washington Mutual branch (use the excuse that you are getting cash from the ATM inside if anyone asks), to take a look at this 1906 marble gem, a fine example of the American urge to revive Greco-Roman classicism in civic buildings.
