Free Walking Tour NYC: 5 Tours Worth Your Time
Free Walking Tour NYC: 5 Tours Worth Your Time
Guía rápida
Free tours in New York are a hugely popular way to get to know the city alongside local guides. They're also a great starting point for discovering iconic New York landmarks for free.
Sign up for all the free tours! You can cancel up until the day before if you run out of time. You've got nothing to lose.
Plus, the guides are lovely and just as in love with New York as we are. It's a chance to get the perspective of someone who actually lives in NYC, and that's priceless.
Below I'll walk you through the best free tours in New York, how to book them, and tips for getting the most out of the experience.
What Are Free Tours?
They're free guided walks you can book without paying anything up front. Even though the tour is free, the custom is to tip the guide at the end.
Ten dollars per person is the minimum you'd be expected to give, if you want a number. But of course it can be less if that's what feels right.

The guides on these walking tours specialize in the city's history, and they've found a way to earn a few well-deserved dollars while sharing their passion for New York. Keep that in mind when it's time to tip.
Booking Free Tours in New York
Among the online platforms for booking free tours in New York, I'll only recommend trustworthy sites like Civitatis and Viabam. Both work with local Spanish-speaking guides who have excellent traveler reviews.
Here are the best free tours in New York, so you can book them easily:
1. Free Central Park tour in Spanish (it's new!)
This free tour takes you through the most iconic corners of Central Park, Manhattan's green lung and a New York icon.

You'll see the famous Bethesda Fountain, the most romantic bridges in Central Park (like Bow Bridge) and John Lennon's Strawberry Fields.
Over roughly two and a half hours, an expert guide shares stories and fun facts, and saves you valuable time so you can go see more of Manhattan afterward.
There's nothing wrong with wandering Central Park on your own, but if you're short on time, the guide will make sure you don't miss a single landmark in this enormous park.
Remember that even though the tour is free, it's customary to thank your guide with a tip at the end.
2. Free Tour of Wall Street and the World Trade Center

This two-and-a-half-hour free tour of Lower Manhattan takes you to the most important spots in the Financial District and the World Trade Center.
Downtown Manhattan is where modern New York first took root, so it's the logical place to start getting to know the city, especially if it's your first trip.
3. Free Tour of Chinatown and Little Italy

On this walking tour of Chinatown and Little Italy, you'll get to know two classic New York neighborhoods, the kind that show up in countless movies filmed in NYC.
Besides Manhattan's Chinatown and Little Italy, you'll also see key spots in SoHo and NoLita.
4. Free Guided Tour of the Village

This free tour of the Village runs an hour and a half and takes you through one of the most bohemian neighborhoods in New York, a place packed with cultural landmarks.
The tour starts at Washington Square, continues to other iconic Greenwich Village spots like Christopher Park and the Stonewall Inn, and ends near the Whitney Museum of American Art.
It's not the same route as the Free Ghost Tour, so you can sign up for both 😉.
5. Free Tour of Midtown Manhattan

The free Midtown Manhattan tour takes you into the heart of New York. You'll pass several of NYC's most famous skyscrapers and visit landmarks like Times Square and Rockefeller Center.
The walk begins at Bryant Park, next to the majestic New York Public Library. From there you'll head to the Theater District and other classic Manhattan neighborhoods.
Along the way you'll pick up fun facts about Midtown and architectural details of landmark buildings like Radio City Music Hall, Grand Central Terminal and the MoMA (Museum of Modern Art).
The two-hour walk ends at the southern edge of Central Park, Manhattan's famous green lung, which you can keep exploring on your own.
6. Free Tour of New York's Mysteries
Unfortunately this tour isn't running at the moment, but I'm leaving the write-up here so I can post the link as soon as it's back. It's so much fun!
This free tour of New York's mysteries and legends promises two hours of fascinating stories and ghostly apparitions. There's a reason Ghostbusters was filmed in New York 👻👻👻.
I'm serious! There are tons of famous ghosts and macabre tales around Greenwich Village and the East Village, two of Manhattan's oldest neighborhoods.

For example, the Jefferson Market Library, where the tour starts, was a courthouse and a jail well into the 20th century. You can imagine the stories about spirits drifting through its halls.
You'll also hear grisly tales involving Mark Twain and Edgar Allan Poe (have you visited Poe's cottage in the Bronx yet?).

And when you reach Washington Square Park, you'll be shocked to learn there's a cemetery beneath the square, and that on windy nights some people claim to have seen hanged bodies dangling from its trees (there was a gallows here in colonial times).
You'll hear tragic stories too, like the fire at the old Triangle Waist shirt factory, where 146 people lost their lives, among them 123 young women immigrants from Eastern Europe. It's the deadliest industrial disaster in New York's history.
I'll stop there so I don't spoil this free ghost tour of the Village. If you're into the paranormal or you just like history, don't miss it.
I took the tour myself and I really do recommend it. It's a very original way to get to know Manhattan's past.
